Aasim’s Time2Shine Story
Aasim is 11 years of age and was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 8. He underwent successful radiotherapy and is now in remission. Both the disease and treatment appeared to take its toll on his day to day life. Aasim school attendance was reduced significantly and he was also forced to stop his weekly visits to Martial Arts club.
During the period of treatment, the radiotherapy had caused his hair to fall out and this in turn had significantly impacted on his confidence and self-esteem. Aasim found it hard to return to the classroom environment in what was his final year of primary school. It was clear that he needed additional support to help enhance his confidence self-worth. The Dare2Dream Foundation were contacted by his school to provide support in the form of the Time2Shine, social and emotional wellbeing programme.
Dare2Dream staff visited Aasim once a week for a 14 week period to deliver a bespoke programme specifically designed to focus on positive aspects of his life such as personal qualities, talents, experiences, goals for the future and preparation for his transition into secondary school. Aasim’s school attendance and classroom participation increased within the first 3 weeks of delivery. His self-esteem increased and social skills enhanced dramatically providing him with the confidence to re-engage with friendship groups.
Aasim has since taken a successful step to secondary school and is happy, enabling him to flourish both socially and academically.
A word from Aasim:
“ To Dare2Dream, Thank you for helping me get through my Year 6.
You have been a great help and YOU ARE THE BEST. You’re a star.”
